SALISH SEA INDIGENOUS GUARDIANS ASSOCIATION

We are an indigenous, non-profit organization established to support meaningful participation in resource policy development and in decision making for our member First Nations pertaining to regulatory processes and development in Traditional Territories.  We aim to build a legacy of true reconciliation that will implement a practical resolution to the shortfalls of regulatory practices that have long been inadequate and problematic in supporting the interests and needs of Indigenous communities.

We seek to support our members through:

  • Building usable baseline and cumulative effects data to fill in the gaps of information from the current environmental assessment and other regulatory processes.

  • Developing a clear cumulative database to be referenced when reviewing proposed projects; therefore making the consultative process more purposeful and efficient (for First Nations, and proponents) in determining avoidance, mitigation, and accommodation.

  • Overlaying an Indigenous perspective and Traditional knowledge for the centralized database to be factored into regulator decisions and development requirements.

  • Supporting capacity and resource requirements for our member First Nations, so that they have what is necessary to participate meaningfully in relevant initiatives and review processes.

  • Build long-term community-led regional monitoring programs and stewardship initiatives to be incorporated into sustainable land use planning

  • Advocating for the interests of our members and coordinating resources and expertise.
