Who we are
We are the Salish Sea Indigenous Guardians Association (SSIGA), an organization focused on supporting Indigenous-driven impact assessments, particularly regarding the health of the Salish Sea and Traditional food sources.

Paving the way for Indigenous-driven processes through the provision of resources, tools, and expertise
SSIGA was formed with the intention of building upon the precedent set by the Squamish Nation process that led to the first-ever Indigenous-issued environmental certificate and conditions.
This process demonstrated that changes to administrative “checklists” for environmental assessments and the consultative process can and should be made to address the informational needs of nations as well as their rights to self-determination regarding impacts on their territories.
Creating meaningful change with a data-driven approach
We work with communities and partners to gather data and run monitoring programs that integrate Indigenous Knowledge with Western science. With clear and tangible data for cumulative impact methodologies, we hope to better support meaningful participation and informed decision-making by Indigenous communities as well as the renewed health of the Salish Sea ecosystem.
SSIGA is an Indigenous-led arms-length organization focused on data collection and impact assessment-related resources and programming. We advocate for the interests and needs of our members as a whole and do not take positions on projects.
