By working together, we can share our knowledge and resources to create positive changes in the regulatory landscape and drive a shift toward effective environmental policies.

Supporting Indigenous Nations with cumulative data, practical tools, and expertise

Indigenous Participation

We are developing and piloting methodologies and impact assessment measurements that take into account traditional and Western sciences. Our mission is to grow Indigenous participation and support informed decision-making.

Subject Matter Expertise and Resources

We share data, analysis, expertise, funding, database access, and in-depth support for referral teams.

Capacity Building

We enable member communities to determine their needs and train them to run Nation-specific programming as well as participate in and manage ongoing SSIGA-specific programs.

Training

We train guardians and monitors for monitoring, restoration, and stewardship programs, and provide training on methodologies and impact assessment tools.

Progressing projects and communities sustainably

We need to work together to enable better methodologies that truly inform Indigenous communities of current conditions and how to measure impacts accurately instead. Today, the standard procedure is to inundate them with data and processes that do not achieve this.

Indigenous perspectives and priorities need to be the drivers of consultation, and Traditional Knowledge should be incorporated into Western science when scoping for cumulative assessments.

Name

I hope that these SSIGA programs can continue on and that other indigenous children from Kwantlen will also be patrolling our streams and rivers. It’s very important as a fisherman for the last 17 years and that these rivers can produce in a natural way.

Keva Vuiyale Kwantlen First Nation,

The benefits of having an indigenous run program is that we view it differently, more culturally. We have more passion, I feel. My vision for SSIGA, in the future, is that we keep working hard and more people will join.

Jace S Kwantlen Guardian, SSIGA

I really do believe we borrow the land from our children and it’s important that we work together to provide that for them. SSIGA’s work is important because we have a different mindset and a different vision for the environment around us. Not many people are willing to turn away profits and infrastructure and bring it back to life.

Tim Dixon Guardian Manager, SSIGA

The benefits of having an Indigenous-led program would be the Indigenous form of intelligence that goes into that and the considerations for those beings and those plants and animals.

Easton A Guardian, SSIGA

As a guardian it means standing up and fighting for what we want, learning about the future and protecting our children. The hopes and visions for SSIGA moving forward would be it’s continuation and seeing more improvement in the data and research that we have been doing.

Rodney J Guardian, SSIGA

I feel that SSIGA’s work is very important because we need to learn a lot about our land and territories. Not just live in it but what we can do to prevent any deterioration and then also what we can do to help flourish.

Chalise M Guardian, SSIGA

It’s really uplifting to see our young ones out there re-engaging with our lands and with our streams. These are streams we pass by everyday so to see them out there, collecting samples and finding these salmon, is something special to see.

William G Guardian, SSIGA

So now that we have the opportunity to sit at these tables and be part of these conversations, it’s our responsibility to protect our homeland – It always has been and it always will be. There are abilities and opportunities to do things in a different way – in a better way.
